Apprenticeships

South Farnham Education Trust supports apprenticeship programmes and has played a leading role in the creation and development of the Teacher Apprenticeship standard. Sir Andrew Carter (CEO) chaired the original Trailblazer Employers Group and Claire Harnden (Deputy CEO) chaired the Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship group. SFET are currently chairing the Teacher Degree Apprenticeship Trailblazer Group and work alongside colleagues at the Department for Education to design an undergraduate employment-based route.

The Teacher Apprenticeship was launched in September 2018 and this gives schools an opportunity to use apprenticeship funding (the apprenticeship levy) for training.  Apprentice teachers will have to meet the same statutory requirements for entry as all other ITT programmes and will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. The apprenticeship route combines paid work with on and off-the-job training. QTS will be awarded to successful apprentices after three terms. In their fourth term i.e. first term of the qualified teaching year teaching apprentices will undergo an ‘end point assessment’ by an independent assessor and, if successful, will then be deemed to have completed their apprenticeship training.

The Teacher Degree Apprenticeship will be launched for recruitment in October 2024 with the first cohort starting in September 2025. This 45-month programme will combine paid work with on and off-the-job training. QTS and a degree will be awarded to successful apprentices following end point assessment.

Apprentices employed by SFET

South Farnham Educational Trust employed four apprentices during 2023-24.

Training Apprentices

South Farnham SCITT is on the Apprenticeship Provider and Assessment Register (previously known as the Register for Apprenticeship Training Providers or ROATP) and trains new teachers through this route. The first cohort of seven apprentices started in 2018 and included the UK's first end point assessed apprentice on this new standard. The programme has grown each year since then.
